30-31/5/1998 - Lions Leadership Workshop

I emphasized that our district currently lacked adequate leadership training. Newly elected officers were not provided with proper briefings, which could lead to ineffective
administration. There was a well-known adage that suggests new leaders bring a
fresh perspective. Therefore, the optimal time to engage our Lions in Lionism was to provide them with training immediately upon their election to office. We
should establish a new tradition of conducting Zonal or District Conferences in
various zones or regions during late April or early May each year. These
District Conferences should serve as a comprehensive platform for training
seminars aimed at the following groups: 1)
President-elect, 2) Club
officers, 3) Club
Committee Members, 4) District
Cabinet Officers
Our district had a sufficient number of trainers who could serve as resource persons and presenters. This initiative also presents an opportunity to enhance the skills of our trainers, allowing them to gain valuable experience.
I was confident that with innovative thinking and effective leadership, District Conferences will significantly benefit our Lion Leaders at all levels.
During the 2-day Lions Leadership Conference at Crown Princess Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, 25 district trainers (DTs) participated. The objective of the Conference was to work out a standard curriculum for the Lions Orientation programme for future seminars and/or workshops. This would ensure consistency in the training contents. All DTs would be knowledgeable when they disseminated to the Lion participants. “Though the district was to be bifurcated by the end of the fiscal year, let the torch of the Lions Leadership be lighted from now on and continue by the Sub Districts,” I told the trainers.
Many proposals were tabled for discussion and decisions were accepted for future use. A 3 to 4-day workshop conference was necessary in the future.
My appointment of eight Leadership Development Chairmen for every region had been fruitful. They were: DC Teoh Ming Liang (R1&2), DC Raymond Tee Pong Meng (R3), DC K.Muthu (R4) DC Woo Sau Yoong (R5), DC Simon Soh (R6&7), DC Yew Siew Kin (R8) and DC Nyiam Tau Choo (R9).
