Most people usually associate Lionism with charity projects, acts of kindness and fund-raisers. However, there is also an essential aspect of Lionism that is sometimes overlooked by outsiders. And that is, we Lions, are destined to promote international understanding amongst the peoples of the world. So, it is not uncommon for Lions Clubs to sign sisterhood alliance between Lion Clubs from different cities in the world.

In the southern tip of Thailand in Hatyai, I was invited to attend the 23rd Twinning Anniversary celebrations between two northern neighbours, the Lions Club of Alor Star and the Lions Club of Hatyai. The function was held at BP Grand Tower Hotel.

The Lions Club of Alor Star, as host, kick-started the night-long programme with a quick formal ceremony, followed by a course dinner. Soon after, it was time for the Lions to hang loose and foster life-long friendship with our Thai guests. A night of entertainment proceeded with fun games, music and dance.

The Thais were equally up to the merriment.  Everyone in the hall literally sang and danced to the beat of the hugely popular Thai classic “loy krathong”.  23 years of friendship and counting … Sawadeekap!
