Club Presidents' Briefing 1997-1998

One of the topics that I felt was important was awards expectations at the convention.

I shared with the Presidents that I have attended similar functions in the past, both as recipients and award presenters. Conceptually we are all winners and deserve awards because of our hard work and dedication. Traditionally we give awards to clubs and individuals who stand out based on a set of criteria and judgement. It is by no means a reflection of what Lionism is all about. We do not believe in winners or losers and we do not believe in differentiating the efforts put forth by individuals or clubs. I shall consider giving recognition to all the members who participated, contributed, and accomplished the many projects carried out by them. As such, we view the awards as a token of recognition for some individuals and clubs and also to recognize all the members to have either helped or been part of the Lions traditions.

Not only should we congratulate those who are receiving the awards but to ask that all members continue to work hard whether or not the awards are coming their way. This will reflect not only the Lions spirit but also our own character and integrity as we joined Lions Clubs to serve with or without awards and recognition.

The best award is to come from within our hearts and we should still smile and feel good about ourselves.
