Launching of Malaysian Liver Foundation

REGION 6 - 13/8/1997

LAUNCHING OF THE MALAYSIAN LIVER FOUNDATION

The Lions Club of Kuala Lumpur South had an ambitious plan to establish the Malaysian Liver Foundation in 1997. The foundation would be headed by Hepatology Specialist Dato’ Dr. Haji Mohd. Ismail Merican with the Prime Minister as its patron. MLF would be a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention, treatment and cure of liver, gall bladder and pancreatic diseases, through education, training and research. The foundation would also focus on creating national awareness of liver diseases, especially among the young.

I was very honoured to be invited to the launching of this mega project by MLF Patron, YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad at Sunway Resort Hotel. Seated at the main table, I formally introduced myself to the Prime Minister and his wife, YB Dato' Chua Jui Meng, the Minister of Health, Dato’ Dr. Hj Mohd. Ismail Merican and Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Jeffrey Cheah, President of the Sungei Way Group.

KL South Lion President Tan Tek Seng and his team were on full throttle to ensure a flawless reception and launch. While strict protocols were adhered, the team somehow managed to make the event casual. Speeches were kept to the minimum. The audience were serenaded with melodious music, enthralling entertainment and a delicious dinner. A huge sum of money was raised for the foundation.

As the event was filled with dignitaries and potential sponsors, I felt that the organisers should have taken the opportunity to highlight the good work undertaken by the Lions for the betterment of society.
