Kuala Krai

18/9/1997 Kuala Krai

Lions Club of Kuala Krai

From Dungun in Trengganu, we drove along miles upon miles of white sandy beaches to Kuala Krai. The 160 km journey was rather tiring for Lucy and me as we encountered torrential rain. Lion Arumugam was driving with extra caution and Zone 6 Chairman Jaspal Singh was constantly wiping the windscreen every 5 minutes due to “fogging”. You see, the air conditioning in the car was not working at all and we had to bear with sauna conditions most of the journey!

Luckily, we reached safely in the evening after 3 long hours of driving, just in time for my call of duty. I happily installed Lion Lee Beng Cheek as the 16th President of Kuala Krai Lions Club. Having seen events in a bigger city, I noted that KK has great exposure to its community. The installation was also graced by the District Officer, Tuan Haji Che Dir who had only kind words for the Lions.

Extract of Speech: "During my travel throughout the country, I have come to know many Lions who have done so much for their community. It is obvious based on my association that you are one of the well-organized and successful clubs. Your club members demonstrate excellent teamwork and spirit to achieve the goals and I applaud you for such fine enthusiasm. you should be proud of yourself to be a good citizen and leader of your community in Kuala Krai"

The next day (19th August), I visited the club house of  Kuala Krai Lions Club. It was a corner terrace shoplot that would be a nexus for Lions’ activities in idyllic Kuala Krai.

My next stop was the Kuala Krai District Hospital.   Here, I had a first-hand look at our nationwide Sightfirst programme. I was introduced to the doctors in charge and given a tour to meet some patients who had undergone cataract removal.
I was briefed by Sightfirst District Chairman Dr. J.P. Kamalanathan that Lions Clubs in Malaysia, through the district sightfirst cataract intervention programme, donated RM600,000.00 worth of equipment to the Kuala Krai Hospital in Kelantan to carry out cataract operations. The equipment included a set of A-Scan, Operating Microscope, Keratometer, and two sets of Cataract Instruments. Through this programme since August 1997, they completed 16 operations. There would be 150 patients on the waiting list. The project would be officially launched on 3/4/1998 by the Heath Minister, Datuk  Chua Jui Meng.

It was a commendable effort and I assured Dr. Kama that I would source more funds to support more worthy patients.  The journey continues …
