Malacca

Malacca

Historical Malacca has always much to offer – good food, scenic places, a multicultural society, and of course, a rich history. After I had attended the 32nd Installation of the Lions Club of Malacca on 27th July 1997, I was inclined to add two more superlatives to this list – great hospitality and generosity!

Well, a mesmerizing Scottish bagpipe display and a host of friendly Lions greeted us. The Guest of Honour was YB. Dato’ Dr. Fong Chan Onn, the Deputy Minister of Education. The bagpipers, all impeccably dressed in kilts, knee socks, and tartan plaids, then led us into the banquet hall. I was deeply honoured to be invited to install the President and his Board of Directors. As is the case with every Lions Club fellowship, Malaccan Lions’ protocols spiced up the ceremony.

In my speech, I complimented the Lions Club of Malacca for their generosity. The club donated RM23,900 to several schools and charitable organizations.

While in conversation, YB Dato’ Dr. Fong was quite impressed with the Lions Clubs’ manifold activities and contribution to society; so much so that Dato’ invited me to his office (at the later part of the year) to share our youth programs.

As the Scottish proverb goes, “Charity begins at home and should not end there”.
