Penang Host

I will remember 1997 as the most-travelled year in my life! As the District Governor, it was imperative that I traversed the length and breadth of Peninsular Malaysia as well as East Malaysia to visit the many Lions Clubs under our umbrella in District 308B.

Amongst my first official visits was to the Lions Club of Penang Host, the oldest club in the district. The club was chartered on 5th August 1963. I was there to attend their Business Meeting, literally in my own backyard! As usual, the meeting was conducted with strict protocols, not before the familiar friendly faces gave me a warm welcome. Just as the meeting had finished, I told Lions to “disregard” my position as DG for the rest of the night as ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’. So we dispensed with protocol and the night began to loosen up. Soon, there were roars of laughter and good camaraderie. Business as usual!
