Lions Club of Kota Setar
Installation
The Lions Club of Kota Setar had its installation and banquet dinner with a royal touch. DYMM Tuanku Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah, the Sultan of Kedah, and his consort Sultanah Hajjah Bahiyah Tuanku Abdul Rahman graced the occasion at the Royal Kedah Club. Lucy and I were invited to this grand event. As district governor, my role was to install the incoming Lion President Lim Bak Seow for fiscal year 1997-1998 and later, present a speech.
DYMM Tuanku and his consort arrived on the dot and were both ushered to a photography session with the VIPs. Everyone was dressed to the nines for the session with the royal couple. Yellow, the royal colour was the main hue. His Royal Highness had a good reputation for inspiring speeches.
Having done the installation, I waited anxiously for Tuanku’s speech. The ADC placed the Sultan’s personal rostrum by the main table and his speech wrapped in a book. The floor was instantly silent. The emcee then proceeded to invite Tuanku. His Majesty slowly stood up and noticed the deafening silence. Tuanku started to crack a few jokes to put everyone at ease. He peppered his speech with anecdotes and morals when needed. It was truly a memorable nite!
How often do you get to sit at the same table as the Sultan and Sultannah?

On 24th March 1998, Lucy and I were invited to attend the Lions Club of Kota Setar's 2nd Charter Anniversary. It was held at a posh restaurant in the town. The members of the Lions Club of George Town which sponsored this club were in full attendance.

It turned out to be a night of fun and merriment. Even though the LC of Kota Setar may be in its infancy, this club had chalked out some impressive projects for the betterment of the community in Alor Star. Keep up the good work!
